Learning to play roulette is not difficult. Learning to play roulette strategically takes a little more skill. The object of roulette is to guess correctly what number a little ball will land on after it spins in the roulette wheel. Betting takes some practice and knowledge and there are many different types of bets with different payouts. Payouts can range from 35/1 or 1/1 depending on the level of risk associated with the bet.
Roulette tables will generally accommodate 1-7 players. The dealer, also referred to as the croupier, stands behind the table that contains the wheel. This is better known as the better area or layout. Players are permitted to bet until the dealer puts up his hands and declares that no more bets can be made. Any bets made after such time will be discounted.
To bet, a player simply places his wager (amount of money he is willing to risk) and then waits to see where the ball will land once it stops rolling. Unlike blackjack or poker, roulette doesn't require as much thought and strategy. Thus it is quite a popular game for beginning gamblers.
There are special chips required for roulette betting. They can generally be purchased at the roulette table and come in different colors. Each color is specific to each individual player at the table in order to distinguish by whom bets are made. It is typical for the dealer to give players about 60 seconds to lay down their bets. Bets can still be played down while the ball is still in motion. If a player decides to leave the table, they may cash in their roulette chips for regular chips. Regular chips are generally redeemable for the associated cash at the cashier's window.
A player can make an inside or outside bet. Inside bets are made on the number grid or layout. An outside bet takes place on the outside of the table or outside the layout. These types of bets are red/black, high/low number, and even/odd bets. Inside bets consist of straight up bets which is a bet on a single number, split bet; betting on two numbers by placing between two numbers, corner bet; betting on 4 numbers placing a chip at the center of 4 numbers, street bet; betting on a row of 3 numbers, or a special line bet which is made by placing a chip on 00, 0, 1, 2 and 3. Outside bets include dozens; betting whether the number 1-12, 13-24, or 25-36 will land. Odd or even bets are as easy as it sounds. If you believe the ball will land on an even number you place and even bet and vice versa. Red or black is similar to odd/even only one bets that the ball will either land on a red or black number. A column bet is similar to a dozen bet in that you bet on one of a group of numbers to land. Finally high/low number bets are also similar to odd/even or red/black. Low numbers refer to 1-18 and high to 19-36.
